Partial dentures are made with small clasps that fit comfortably around existing teeth so that the appliance is held in place. Natural-looking replacement teeth can be added to the partial if you suffer from additional tooth loss later on. However, this is only the case if you still have enough healthy teeth to sustain the partial while wearing it. What are complete dentures?
Complete dentures are made to replace all of your missing teeth. They are made using an acrylic-type material that is tinted to look like real gums and artificial teeth crafted to look like real white teeth. An upper denture suctions to the roof of your mouth, and a lower denture rests on the boney ridge of your jawbone. Dentures are affordable and can last for many years with good care and maintenance.
What if Iāve had missing teeth for years, can I still get dentures?
It is possible that dentures may still be an option for you, even if your teeth were removed long ago. Our dentist can assess your oral health and jawbone levels to ensure there is enough to support the denture. If not, we may recommend incorporating dental implants into your treatment plan to give you the best results possible.
Do I need to see the dentist after getting dentures?
Yes! Patients that wear partials or that have no teeth at all and wear dentures should still see the dentist. Dentists donāt just treat your teeth but your entire oral cavity. During your exams, we assess your gum and jawbone health and perform oral cancer screenings. We also look for things that cannot always be seen by the eye or noticeable to patients, but that could be detrimental to your oral health or overall health.
We recommend that you brush your gums (and any remaining teeth) twice a day to maintain fresh breath, remove harmful oral bacteria, and reduce your risk of developing gum disease. Therefore, denture-wearing patients should still see the dentist to ensure there are no oral diseases that are left untreated.
What is a better option than traditional dentures?
Traditional dentures have been reliable tooth replacement options for many years. But some patients complain about their loose fit and wish for a more secure option.
