Tooth Extraction

Sciota, Pennsylvania

At Chestnuthill Dental, we encourage patients to repair their damaged teeth when possible. However, in some cases, a tooth is damaged beyond repair, or it is the patient’s wish that we extract the tooth instead of repairing it. Therefore, we offer tooth extraction services at our Chestnuthill Dental office.

What are the reasons a dentist may recommend an extraction?

The dentist may recommend an extraction under careful consideration and only after a thorough exam that includes x-rays. The purpose of taking an x-ray, even if the tooth is to be extracted, is to gauge its positioning in the jawbone and its difficulty to remove. The dentist can also assess the surrounding jawbone before extracting the tooth. With this information, the dentist can decide whether to extract the tooth or refer you to an oral surgeon.

Common reasons to extract a tooth may include:

However, the best way to know if your teeth require an extraction is to schedule a consultation with Chestnuthill Dental. We are also available for emergency dental visits by calling (570) 402-4001.

What level of discomfort is expected
when getting an extraction?

During the procedure itself, you should not feel any discomfort because your mouth will be numb. However, you are likely to feel some pressure as we gently remove the tooth. Afterward, it is likely that you will experience some discomfort that can be minimized with over-the-counter pain-reducing medication and by applying an ice pack to the affected side of your face for up to 15 minutes at a time.

Pain should not last more than several days. If it does, or you experience severe pain, swelling, or a fever, please contact our office immediately.

How can I avoid
an extraction?

Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are one of the best ways
to keep your teeth in gums in good shape and to reduce the risk of
needing an extraction. However, sometimes patients can try their best and practice good oral hygiene, yet accidents happen, and tooth cracks or
breaks out of nowhere.

What can I do to restore my smile after an extraction?

At Chestnuthill Dental, we offer tooth replacement options to restore your smile after an extraction. Depending on your oral health needs and your finances, you may decide to replace your tooth with a dental bridge, partial denture, or dental implant. We would be happy to discuss tooth replacement options with you to help you decide on the best treatment for your smile needs.
