Do I need to Straighten My Teeth if I want to get Veneers?

straighten teeth before veneers

Sciota, Pennsylvania

Have you ever dreamed of having a perfect smile with straight white teeth? Most people assume that an attractive smile is only achievable with braces or orthodontics. But cosmetic dentistry can do a lot for your smile, including creating perfect-looking teeth. Veneers are the most sought-after cosmetic dental treatment to achieve a beautiful, perfect smile. Some patients choose to get only one or two veneers and others may opt for a full mouth makeover to cover all their teeth that are visible when smiling. But a common question we get from patients is, do I need to straighten my teeth if I want to get veneers? So today on the blog, our cosmetic dentists in Sciota answer this question.

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain coverings that are permanently bonded to the front surface of your teeth. The teeth are prepped by removing a minimal amount of enamel, which keeps the veneers from looking too thick and bulky once applied. Veneers are matched to your existing teeth if you’re only getting one or two. However, if you opt for a full mouth makeover, you can choose a brighter shade for an overall whiter look when you smile. Once your teeth are prepped, you’ll wear temporary veneers for a few weeks, until we get your permanent ones returned from the dental lab. Then, you return to our office to have your veneers bonded, revealing your new, flawless smile.

Can I still get veneers if my teeth are crooked?

Most patients with slightly crooked, twisted, or uneven teeth can still get veneers without straightening their teeth or undergoing orthodontic treatment. The reason is that the dentist preps your teeth, removing a specific amount of tooth structure so that when the veneers are bonded, your teeth look perfectly straight, bright white, and without any gaps or overlapping. So, if you opt for veneers, you could have a perfect smile with straight teeth in a matter of weeks, not years! Now, keep in mind that veneers give the appearance of perfectly straight teeth, this procedure does not realign your teeth from the root, like orthodontics. Therefore, some bite irregularities or tooth misalignment may require additional dental treatments before getting veneers. But the best way to know for sure in your case is to schedule a consultation with our Sciota area cosmetic dentists at Chestnuthill Dental.

How long will veneers last?

As with anything else, care and maintenance are required if you want your results to last. Oral hygiene like brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily is recommended to reduce harmful oral bacteria that may lead to infections or tooth decay in the areas not covered by veneers. Additionally, plan on visiting your dentist once every six months for checkups and cleanings. If you’re willing to commit to good oral hygiene efforts and regular dental visits, then veneers may be the right option for you.
